What experience have you had with designing something for a client (even if it was a friend)? How did it turn out? Was there something that happened that you didn’t expect? What would you do differently next time?
One experience I had was designing a shirt for my Fresno to Pismo relay run. I made this design for my team and I really wanted to incorporate the whole experience of the whole run. It was an intense relay race from River park to the sandy beach of Pismo.
I first started off doing some research and finding inspiration for a shirt design. Considering I had never designed a shirt, my design did come out better than I thought.
I started sketching out some ideas that involved running shoes, shoe prints, palms, a sun, some mountains, and different font ideas.
Finally after I had an idea of what I wanted to do, I had the idea of using my own running shoe to trace to use as the my design.
I used my shoes and decided to make my shoe in a pattern like way and I made the bamboo font and all the other elements in the design. I started my drawing and then moved it to Illustrator.
In Illustrator, I started off tracing my drawing and then I moved on with the color choices I had in mind.
I created the black and white design and showed it to my team leader and she approved of it and I added some color choices.
She did have some few suggestions that I took into consideration. One important thing she did mention was that I was limited on the colors because it was going to be printed on a shirt and other apparel.
After I was finished with the design and my team leader approved it, we sent it off to print. There were some technical issues when it came to the type of files he was requesting but everything turned out great.
I didn’t expect for the different file he was asking for because I had worked in Illustrator and he had a different program. But after we adjusted everything, we were able to print our team apparel.
I would have tried to work on it a bit faster but other than that it went very smoothly.
At the end it was a very nice project and I was able to use my creativity for another thing that I love to do which was running.
